“The best things in life are rescued.”

It’s a message that is displayed prominently at PAWS & More, a local animal shelter in Washington — a message that drives their every interaction and partnership.

One such partnership is with Optimae LifeServices’ supported employment team, which provides job coaching to individuals who have historically experienced barriers to consistent employment, rescuing them from some of life’s challenges. Individuals served by Optimae work at the shelter in various roles, including cleaning and administrative tasks.

Amber Talbot, PAWS & More director, said she’s amazed that more organizations don’t provide the same opportunity.

“I’m really surprised when I hear that others aren’t doing this,” Talbot said. “[The workers from Optimae] are a big help.”

Daniel McLemore assists the shelter with its donor management system, inputting data into the computer software that helps the shelter track those who have contributed to its cause. Talbot said McLemore’s attention to detail is an asset.

“Daniel adds the information without errors,” Talbot said. “And he’s fast. He does amazing work.”

Justice Bacon rinses and sanitizes a pet bowl at PAWS & More Animal Shelter.

In another area of the shelter, Justice Bacon disinfects cat bowls. After the bowls are dry, she replenishes them with fresh food and water. A lover of animals, Bacon volunteered at the shelter before securing her current position. As she works, it’s evident she has found a way to serve her community while doing something she loves.

“At Optimae, we provide those we serve with a valued role,” said Esther Carter, Optimae LifeServices employment specialist. “PAWS & More has allowed us that opportunity — it’s a great partnership.”

When workers from Optimae have a break in their duties, they enjoy the perks of being surrounded by the animals. The shelter’s feline friends have their own “catio” — a patio for cats — complete with a literal catwalk near the ceiling.

“I like to go in with the animals and just relax,” Bacon said.

The welcoming environment is credited to Talbot and her staff, a close-knit group who are bound by a common purpose — to “Provide Animals With Shelter” (PAWS) while adding “More” — the loving care and treatment they give to every animal (and every individual) who passes through their doors.
