October 9, 2026 (DES MOINES) – Optimae LifeServices announced today it successfully secured a $1,150 Voter Empowerment Grant from the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council.
Optimae used the grant funds to create a mock election event, held October 2 at the human services organization’s community integration program in Adel, home of its Dallas County community services offices.
Grant recipients were selected from organizations that demonstrated a commitment to helping people with disabilities in voting. Optimae’s event provided its customers with the opportunity to learn about the voter registration process, receive assistance with identifying their voter precincts and complete mock ballots in private voting booths.
“Democracy works best when everyone has the opportunity to participate,” said Holly Stevenson, director of diversity, inclusion and belonging at Optimae. “Our mock election goes beyond casting a practice ballot — it is about empowering our customers, removing barriers and reminding everyone that each voice matters.”
According to the Iowa DD Council, an additional 2.0 million voters would be added to election results if people with disabilities voted at the same rate as similar people without disabilities.
“Our goals include empowering Iowans with disabilities to use their voice and speak up for what they want and need,” said Carlyn Crowe, public policy manager for the Iowa DD Council. “Optimae did an amazing job of showcasing how and why we should all use our voice by voting.”
